THE PEOPLE OF IDO COMMUNITY IN ASALGA, RIVERS STATE RECOMMITS THEMSELVES TO MAINTAINING EQUAL RIGHTS AND PEACE WITHIN ALL UNITS OF THE COMMUNITY

As the message of Quality Leadership, Peace Building and Non-violent conflict resolution reaches the people of Ido community in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, Support Initiative for Sustainable Development (SISDEV) has admonished the traditional rulers, men, women and youths of the community to work together for the upward growth of their land.

Speaking at a Community Town hall meeting organised by SISDEV in partnership with the British Council, which held at the Ido Community Town Hall on the 28th of July 2022, the Executive Director of SISDEV, Philip Kalio while introducing the program, stated that there are international organisations like the British Council, who are interested in the development and growth of the rural aeas, adding that the meeting is a part of a project that is targeted at Enhancing Community Peace and Electoral Violence Abatement Through Local Conflict Mitigation.

While Speaking on Quality Leadership, Mr Kalio pointed out that the growth of a community is strongly dependent in their ability to choose a credible leader who can represent them without putting personal interest ahead of the people.

In view of the coming 2023 elections, he admonished the youths of the community not to allow themselves to be tools of violence in the upcoming elections. He urged them to work with the traditional rulers and other members of the community to secure the future of their people.

Some community members who spoke to SISDEV media team after the meeting, expressed gratitude for the privilege of  being a part of such eye opening lectures. Below are their success stories:

Oluntadaba Boma (Female)   This meeting is an eye opener to us. It has helped us to know our right as a people. We have learnt that we should not allow conflict to escalate into violence. Our people should vote peacefully in the coming election so we can maintain the peace in Ido as a community that is known as a place of refuge.
Sagbe Endure (Youth) As a youth representative, the NGO have come and their teaching about how to resolve conflict without violence is very helpful. If we can practice what we have learnt today, our community will grow.
Fubara Iyeritamuno  (Male) Our community is peaceful before this time but we have added more knowledge to maintain our peace. We love the work that was  done here today. We now understand how to vote in the coming elections and how to protect our right as a people.

Ido Community is one out of 10 Communities in Asari Toru and Degema Local Government Area, chosen for the implementation of the EU-ACT/British Council project collaboration on Enhancing Community Peace and Electoral Violence Abatement Through Local Conflict Mitigation in Rivers State.
