EU-ACT PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION: SISDEV Trains Youths and Community Representatives in DELGA and ASALGA in Rivers State

Support Initiative for Sustainable Development (SISDEV) in partnership with the British Council, organized a 3-days Capacity Building Training Workshops in Degema and Asari-Toru Local Government Areas (respectively) to empower community leaders, women and youths as champions of peace in their communities.

The training workshop held in Asari-Toru Local Government Area from the 31st of May to the 2nd of June 2022 at Ido Community Town hall; while the one for Degema held at the Degema Community Town hall from the 24th to the 26th of May, 2022.

The training workshop was organized as a strategy to enhance the knowledge and skills of community leaders and community representatives (including women, youths, elders and people with disabilities) on leadership qualities, peace building, conflict management and mitigation of electoral violence. The aim of the program is to equip community based champions and ambassadors of peace and social inclusion to reaching the wider community.

Group Activity

As part of their success stories, the community members expressed gratitude to SISDEV and the British Council for such information that has awakened them from what one of the youths from Usokun Community in Degema termed as “dark leadership”.  Another youth from Ilelema Community in ASALGA confessed an immediate change of mind from a planned youth revolution against their community chiefs.

The training workshop enhanced the knowledge of the trained participants in Degema LGA by 22% and 20% in Asari-Toru LGA with new insights on peace building, conflict management, quality leadership, social inclusion and non-violent electoral processes.

The workshop also featured security agencies like the Police and Man O War who indicated their commitment to collaborate with the youths and community leaders to reduce crime and electoral violence in the communities.
